10 Dangerous Myths About Diets and Weight Loss

© 2008 Jonni Good

I've been writing about weight loss and health issues for years, but I now realize that some of the advice I passed on to my readers was wrong. In fact, some of the worst diet myths are the ones that seem like "common sense." And that could be bad news for you and your family.

One thing I managed to get right is that many of us get fat by eating too much sugar and white flour. I knew from my own experience that removing these foods from the diet will almost automatically cause weight loss, but that it's hard to give up these foods because they're addictive (especially sugar).

leftcolumn The connection between sugar and obesity is true, and sugar really is addictive - but I interpreted this information I fell back on "common knowledge". And that was one of my biggest mistakes.

I thought it was easier to lose weight when we give up sugar and refined flour because these two foods are so high in calories. Removing them from the diet will automatically lower the number of calories we eat, (or so I assumed), and weight loss would be a natural result.

For years we've been told that we get fat because we eat too much, and we'll lose weight when we eat less. It seems so obvious - but it isn't actually true.

In fact, respected scientists disproved this notion in the early 1900's, but we are only now beginning to hear about these studies in the national press.

In this article you'll read why this assumption about calories and obesity can actually be dangerous to your health. You'll also read about 9 other common falacies that most of us have believed over the years. You'll discover that some of these myths about diet and weight loss can actually make you gain weight.

Even more importantly, some of these dietary mistakes can cause nutritional deficiencies in both adults and children, and can lead to chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

Once you read this article you'll see why good food is so important - it isn't just about weight loss, it's about your family's health.
